A hand seed cleaner separates good grain from chaff, dust, weed seed, immature kernels and other light material. It is a small machine with an outsized effect: sowing clean, heavy seed is one of the cheapest ways a farmer can lift germination and reduce weed pressure in the next crop.

What cleaning actually removes

After threshing with a power thresher or paddy thresher, grain still carries straw fragments, dust, empty husks, shrivelled kernels and often weed seed. A cleaner uses sieves and airflow to separate them: heavy, sound grain falls one way, light material is carried off another.

The result is both visibly cleaner and measurably heavier per volume, which is what buyers and seed programmes look for.

Why clean seed pays

Immature and damaged kernels either do not germinate or produce weak seedlings that never catch up. Sowing them wastes seed and leaves gaps in the stand. Weed seed is worse: you carry it into the field, then spend labour or herbicide removing the plants it produces.

For farmers keeping their own seed — still the norm for many crops — a cleaning pass before storage is the difference between seed that performs and seed that disappoints.

Using it well

• Dry the grain first. Damp grain does not separate cleanly and blocks sieves.
• Match the sieve to the crop and grain size; the wrong sieve either passes trash or rejects good grain.
• Set airflow carefully. Too strong blows out sound grain; too weak leaves chaff behind.
• Feed steadily rather than dumping grain in; even flow gives even separation.
• Check both outputs — if good grain is going out with the waste, adjust immediately.

Storing cleaned seed and maintaining the machine

Clean seed still needs correct storage: dried to a safe moisture, cooled, and kept in sealed containers or well-stacked bags off the floor in a dry, shaded store. Label batches with variety and date — in seed, knowing what you have is half the value.

The machine itself needs little: empty and brush out sieves after use so damp grain dust does not cake, check and replace damaged sieves, keep moving parts greased, and store dry. Inspect everything before the season rather than on the day you need it.
