The BARI bed planter shapes raised beds and places seed on them in the same pass. For vegetables, maize, wheat and pulses, bed planting gives crops something flat land often cannot: drainage in wet spells, controlled irrigation in dry ones, and permanent furrows to walk and work in.

Why bed planting works in Bangladeshi conditions

Two risks dominate field crops here: too much water at the wrong time, and too little later in the season. Raised beds address both. Excess rain runs into the furrows instead of standing around the roots, which reduces waterlogging damage in vegetables and pulses. In dry weeks, water applied in the furrow moves sideways into the bed, so you wet the root zone without flooding the whole field.

The furrows also give you a clean path to walk, spray and apply fertiliser without trampling the crop.

The planter shapes the soil into beds of consistent width and height, then meters seed onto the bed in rows at a set depth and covers it. Because bed shape and seed placement happen together, the rows sit in the same place on every bed — which is exactly what later mechanical operations need.

Getting good beds

• Prepare and level first. A rough, cloddy field gives crumbling beds. Till to a reasonable tilth before bed forming.
• Watch soil moisture. Slightly moist soil holds a bed shape; dust-dry soil collapses and wet soil smears.
• Calibrate the seed rate before sowing the whole plot, and check depth by digging a few places after the first pass.
• Keep bed spacing consistent so sprayer and weeder wheels can run in the furrows all season.

Buying, matching and maintenance

Bed planters are tractor- or power-tiller-drawn, so confirm the hitch and power match before buying — a mini tractor is a common pairing on small and medium farms. Ask which crops the metering unit is set up for, since seed size varies a lot between maize, wheat and vegetables.

Maintenance is straightforward: empty and clean the seed hopper after use, clear soil from the bed formers and openers, check for worn or bent parts, grease moving joints and store under cover. Replace worn furrow openers before the season rather than during it.
